What Is Steampunk?

Steampunk began as a subgenre of science fiction and fantasy literature, but has developed in recent years to become an inspired movement of creativity and imagination.

Steampunk works are often set in an alternative history of the 19th century's British Victorian era or American "Wild West", in a post-apocalyptic future during which steam power has maintained mainstream use.

Steampunk features anachronistic technologies or retro-futuristic inventions as people in the 19th century might have envisioned them, and is likewise rooted in the era's perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art. Modern technologies are re-imagined and realised as elaborate works of art, fashion, and mechanics. If Jules Verne or H.G. Wells were writing their science fiction today, it would be considered “steampunk.”

How do I dress in Steampunk?

It is such a wide genre that we hope everyone can find something to suit them and keep them comfortable. You can just add a small piece of flair to your normal clothing, or go all out take on a new persona. We have put together a gallery of images below to give you ideas of how others have created Steampunk outfits.

Here are a couple of great blog post from a very talented lady giving a step by step guide as to how she would construct an outfit:
